Description
Scope/Content: Manuscript text written on blank pages of printed book. Bound with: Woodward, Josiah. An account of the rise and progress of the religious societies of London. London: printed for the author, sold by Richard Sympson at the Harp in St. Paul's Churchyard and W. Haws at the Rose in Ludgate-street, 1701.
Scope/Content: Manuscript text relating to the religious society of Romney, Kent, particularly its strong musical tradition. Bound with Josiah Woodward's Account of the rise and progress of the religious societies, which includes a letter written from the minister of Old Romney, this manuscript text appears to have been written by Nicholas Durant, whose name appears on the title page to Woodward's book. The manuscript contains hymns, psalms, "meditations and prayers for private devotion" and "Peculier orders of the Society of Romney." Some of the psalms included here were also published in the 1724 Christian sacrifice of praise, but this manuscript is not a replica of that text. The last page in the bound volume contains some historical notes about Durants of New Romney, written in a later 18th or 19th century hand.
Condition: Bound in old calf. Front hinge completely defective.
