Scope/Content: Manuscript commonplace book containing a history of the antiquities of Winterton, Lincolnshire and epitaphs from various locations, in addition to passages from mostly devotional 18th century poetry. It seems that the text was likely written by the Thomas Wigelsworth of Epworth, though the handwriting in the volume changes from a more juvenile hand to a more adult over the course of the text. Some of the Winterton material likely comes from published sources, but there are some passages that show some original research (or at least a familiarity with church monuments and gravestones). Similarly, many of the epitaphs seem to have been transcribed while visiting churchyards, though there are others that are likely copied from published sources or other manuscript compilations. The poetry included is largely devotional and none appear to be original compositions.
Condition: Bound in old vellum and rebacked at an early date with leather; covers worn and dirty with some large wrinkles.
