Scope/Content: Manuscript annotations in printed book.
Scope/Content: Interleaved and annotated copy of John Ray's A collection of English proverbs. This has been previously described as Ray's copy of his text, but this is unsubstantiated. The text has been copiously annotated in a contemporary hand with additional proverbs and other textual information, written both on the interleaves and in the margins and blank spaces of the printed book.
Condition: Bound in red morocco in 1868 with the arms of Sir William Stirling Maxwell; front and back cover detached.

Armorial binding and bookplate of William Stirling Maxwell; note signed by Stirling Maxwell (dated Keir, July 1868) on first preliminary page noting purchase of this volume at the H.G. Bohn sale at Sotheby's in 1868 and that 13 leaves previously missing have been added when the book was put in its current binding. Inscribed "From Mr. Heber's Collection, Thomas Thorpe" on second preliminary page. Note in contemporary hand on page facing title page: "Ray's Proverbs subsequent to 1678." Heber Sale, 20 November 1834 lot 2728; H.G. Bohn sale, 1868, lot 6795.
