Frederick Madison Roberts was a newspaper owner and editor, educator, and business owner. He was also the first African American elected to the California State Assembly. Roberts was a great-grandson of Sally Hemings and President Thomas Jefferson. Gloria Roberts, daughter of Pearl Hinds and Frederick Madison Roberts, graduated from the University of Southern California and studied at the Juilliard School of Music. She was a concert pianist, living and performing in Europe. Her grandmother, Ellen Hemings Roberts, was a granddaughter of Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson.
