Description
The Williams Jubilee Singers were organized in Chicago (1904) by Charles P. Williams. They were among the first jubilee singing groups to use a quartet rather than the usual 10 to 12. They performed in the United States and Europe, disbanding in the early 1930s.
The original members of the Williams Jubilee Singers were: Charles P. Williams (tenor, of Holly Springs, MI), George L. Johnson (first tenor, Charles' brother), J. H. Johnson (baritone, of Coal Creek, TN), J. S. Crabbe (bass, of Galva, IL), Virginia Dancey Greene (soprano, of Avoca, IA), Annis Hackley (soprano, of Pittsburgh, PA), Clara Kindle Williams (alto, Charles’s wife), Inez L. McAllister (alto, of Pueblo, CO), and Hattie Hobbs Johnson (pianist, of Murfreesboro, TN).
