Charles Heard Matthews was a prominent attorney in Los Angeles who served on numerous boards including Golden State and Liberty Savings. He was the younger brother of Miriam Matthews. Frederick Madison Roberts was a newspaper owner and editor, educator, and business owner. He was also the first African American elected to the California State Assembly. Roberts was a great-grandson of Sally Hemings and President Thomas Jefferson. Paul Williams was an African American architect who designed almost 2,000 homes in the Los Angeles area. He worked for wealthy celebrity clients, but also designed affordable homes, public housing, and civic, commercial, and institutional buildings.
