Reverend Clayton D. Russell was an important religious and political leader in the Los Angeles African American community. He was the pastor of the People's Independent Church of Christ from 1936 to 1953. He founded the Church of Divine Guidance in 1953 and was the pastor until his death in 1981. Gwendolyn Diggs was an elementary school teacher in the Los Angeles school district for 17 years; she also worked in the Department of Social Welfare. She was married to Clayton D. Russell. Founded in 1915, the Peoples Independent Church of Christ was created when 47 members split from First A. M. E. Church. Portrait of Reverend Clayton D.
