Description
Digitization for the AIIS Center for Art & Archaeology Negatives & Slides collection was sponsored by the Modern Endangered Archives Program with funding from Arcadia. Bas relief depicting Dipankara jataka ( the story of ascetic Sumedha and the Buddha Dipankara). Detail of pedestal depicting seated Bodhisattva This object was housed at the National Museum of Afghanistan, Kabul, Afghanistan at the time of photography in 1971, It was documented under the supervision of Dr Walter Spink. Stylistically the sculpture belongs to Gandhara period that ranged from 100 - 299 CE. It was discovered from Shotorak, a Buddhist site located in Kapisa Province, Afghanistan. The object material for the sculpture is schist and its dimension is 83.0 (H) x 45.0 (L) cm. The panel represents Dipankara Jataka, the narrative depicts Sumedha in act of throwing flowers upon Dipankara Buddha (predecessor of Buddha Sakyamuni, within the same scene Sumedha is again shown as prostrating at the feet of Dipankara Buddha.
