Description
Digitization for the AIIS Center for Art & Archaeology Negatives & Slides Collection was sponsored by the Modern Endangered Archives Program with funding from Arcadia. Seal of Nalanda Maha Vihara This object was housed at the Archaeological Museum, Nalanda, Bihar, India at the time of photography in 1967. It Is an impression of a circular seal and was executed in-between 1000 - 1099 CE. The object depicts a 'Wheel of the law' (Dharmachakra) flanked by two deer symbolizing Buddha's preaching at Sarnath. It is placed above a three line inscription in Sanskrit language written in Nagari script which is translated as [Seal] of the venerable community of monks at the Great Nalanda monastery (Śrī Nālandā - mahāvihārīyārya-bhikşu-sañghasya).
