Studio portrait of Colonel James Beck in military uniform with a sword.
James Beck, born in Kansas City, Kansas, was a soldier in the Spanish American war and he served in the tenth cavalry regiment under Theodore Roosevelt. The 10th Cavalry Regiment was one of the four all-black "buffalo soldier" regiments in the Army. He was also a soldier in World War I possibly 1917-1918.
Written on back of photo: Col. James Beck (1898) Kansas City, Kansas. Volunteer part of tenth cavalry U.S. Army. Went over the top at San Juan Hill with Col. Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt who mentions Col. J. Beck in his book "Rough Riders." Credit : Ethel Bruington (Niece of Col. Beck)
