Description
John Zuke Tanaka in his baseball uniform at Washington Park. Known as Zuke Tanaka as a student at Occidental College, he was the captain of the Tigers baseball team on which he played for at least 3 years and made Phi Beta Kappa. "Although the team as a whole was described as "weak hitting and fielding," shortstop Betts, pitcher Fulton, and center fielder Shizona "Zuke" Tanaka '26 were notable exceptions." (Bringing Back Bengal Baseball : A Mini History of Occidental College Baseball 1889-2014). A newspaper report attests that he was the "strong rock in the infield" and that "Last year 'Tan' played center field and his was the only playing that could be called real ball. In the infield he will be the terror of stick wielders." from "OXY OVERCOMES "JINX": Coach Clark Builds Baseball Nine That Should Show up Strong in Conference Race," Los Angeles Times, 25 Mar. 1924: B2. His name is listed as John Frederick Shizona Tanaka on his WWIII Draft Card, and as John S. Takata on the record for his relocation as a Japanese American at Gila River during WWII. His mother was Yoshi Tanaka, his brother was Frank Manaabu Tanaka and his sisters were Jeri Yuki Tanaka, and Machiko Tanaka.
