Description
Studio portrait of Nathaniel Smith, a Mendocino County pioneer who drove a stagecoach. He is seated on a wooden stool in front of a landscape backdrop.
Nathaniel Smith was a free black man from Maryland who purchased (together with his partner Francisco Faria) a tract of a Mexican land grant which extended from the north bank of the Garcia River to the south bank of the Rio Grande (Big River) in Mendocino County.
