Description
Group portrait of a class at Longfellow School with 42 elementary students. Virginia Stephens is in the class (row 3, 3rd from left).
Virginia Stephens Coker was an attorney. In 1924, she was the second woman to receive a law degree from Boalt School of Law at UC Berkeley, and the first African American woman to complete the program. When she passed the bar the same year, she became the first African American female attorney in California. She had a private law practice in Virginia for ten years. In 1939 she returned to California and joined the State Office of Legislative Counsel where she worked, earning promotions and becoming the head of the Indexing Section, retiring in 1966.
