Description
Poster held by Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library. History & Special Collections, Collection no. 306, item GW139. Poster is a comical cartoon drawing of a swan, with a condom on its beak, lamenting "Why does Leda expect me to do this?" The obvious reference is to the classical Greek myth, "Leda and the Swan," in which Zeus transforms himself into a Swan in order to lay with Leda (and impregnate her). The condom symbolizes protection against pregnancy, and could also be considered a symbol of protection against AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases. Part of the public AIDS campaigns in Germany: Gib AIDS keine Chance [Don't give AIDS a chance] Date on back of poster, 1999, reflects when the vendor received the copy later acquired by the UCLA Library.
