Description: This image was likely captured before takeoff of Santa Monica-to-Cleveland derby race that took place late August 1931, as reported on in "Derby Aviators Hop Off Today: Santa Monica-to-Cleveland Speed Classic Ready, Women Compete on Equal Basis with Men, Nation's Leading Pilots Vie for $25,000 Awards," Los Angeles Times, 23 Aug. 1931: A1. The aforementioned article cites the airport's location at "the intersection of Ocean Park (National) and Centinela Boulevards." This location is known contemporarily as the Santa Monica Airport. Written on the airplane: Mildred Morgan / Radio / [K]TM Angeles.
