The photo appears with article "'Bad Man' and Officer Slain: Battle Fought on Ranch of Actress Near Saugus, She Calls Help as Gunman's Love is Spurned, Constable and Aide Are Met by Hail of Bullets," Los Angeles Times, 15 Sep. 1924: A1. Text from negative sleeve: Bayles, Nellie Miss. Actress. Text from newspaper caption: Romance in Hills Costs Two Lives. Cause of Battle and Officers Participating. Miss Nellie Bayles, known on stage as Bonita Darling, at top, for love of whom "Bad Man" issued threats causing her to summon officers. Fatal fray ensued. At lower left is Constable Pitcher, who slew Gunman Le Brun after latter had fatally shot Deputy Constable Ed Brown, at right. Brown later died in hospital.
