This photograph appears with the article, by John Dart, "Priest's sex change may pose test of church law," Los Angeles Times, 19 July 1980: A25. Ledins (1932-2017) was a Catholic priest, known as William Griglak, and had PhD in psychology from Catholic University. Ledins resigned the priesthood in 1969, married a former nun and worked as a psychologist in the drug treatment section of the Indiana Commission on Mental Health. Undergoing a sex change operation in 1979, becoming Nancy Ledins, she wrote an autobiography the following year, and published a book titled, Tippet and his friends: For teens and grown-ups who have not lost the magic in their childhood, in 1986. During the last five years of her life, Ledins was an active member at Wedgewood, a church in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she preached, and provided many other ministries. Text from newspaper caption: NOW--Nancy Ledins of Van Nuys might be the first woman priest in Roman Catholic history, although in a technical sense only.
