Newman, W.P. Cook, and L.R. Spindel, other members of the strike committee, receiving news that their planned 2:00 am worker walkout had been blocked by President Roosevelt. The President had appointed a commission to negotiate the Brotherhood's disputes over unfair wages and hours. It was agreed that, during the negotiations, the strike would be postponed.
