Spectator taking a nap on a staircase at Santa Anita Park. On this day, race horse Seabiscuit won the $100,000 Santa Anita Handicap and set a new track record for the mile and a quarter race. The Los Angeles Times called it “the most popular victory in the history of western racing.” Seabiscuit’s victory received a rousing ovation from the 74,000 spectators
