Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. A view of the bell cote (bell gable, campanario, espadaña) from the back at San Antonio de Pala Asistencia. The bell cote is unique among the California missions as a free-standing structure. The original bell cote was destroyed by torrential rains in 1916 and was replaced by a precise replica immediately. The Pala Mission was a sub-mission to Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, some twenty miles inland upstream from the mission on the San Luis Rey River.
