Description
The bell cote (bell gable, campanario, espadaña) at San Antonio de Pala Asistencia, which contains two bells, is unique among the California missions as a free-standing structure. The original bell cote was destroyed by torrential rains in 1916 and was replaced by a precise replica immediately. The Pala Mission was a sub-mission to Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, some twenty miles inland upstream from the mission on the San Luis Rey River. Mountains are visible in the background.
