Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. The New Court building at St. John's College, a constituent of the University of Cambridge. The New Court was designed by Thomas Rickman and Henry Hutchinson and built between 1826 and 1831. It is in the Gothic Style with battlements, pinnacles, and a cloister and gateway across one side (viewed here). The New Court's central tower has four blank clock-faces. There are several legends about why the clocks are faceless, including the suggestion that Henry Hutchinson asked that they remain that way so that the building would not lose its symmetry.
