Still standing, opposite the Plaza is the old Pico House, now the National Hotel, which served as the city's most elaborate hostelery a half century ago. It was the terminus of the Los Angeles-San Francisco six horse stages before the railways. To the extreme right of the hotel is the first theater, the Merced, opened in 1870 in Los Angeles.
