The Patterson Field track at Occidental College enters frame at left and along the bottom edge; it stretches back towards center. In the mid-ground, half-mile racers Dick Pollard (left), of Pomona College, and Mel Caldwell (right), of Occidental College approach the tape at the end of the race. All runners run towards the camera. Dick Pollard is a half-step nearer to the finish line than Mel Caldwell. Caldwell appears to lean forward to make up the gap. Meet officials along both the right and left edges hold up the tape at the finish line. Bob McKee runs a few strides behind and to the right of his teammate, Mel Caldwell. Spectators watch the race from the stands that line the track at left. In the background at center, Swan Hall rises beyond the track.
