The Patterson Field track at Occidental College occupies the bottom half of the image and stretches back on an angle to the right. In the mid-ground, several runners sprint towards the camera and to the finish line. At center, and first to the tape, is Don Plumb of Pomona College. He pumps both fists in the air as he approaches the line. Following behind him at right are Occidental College runners, Ivan Belman and Sid Todd (rightmost). A few other runners are behind and to the left of Don Plumb. Crowded stands line the left side of the track. Swan Hall stands beyond the far end of the bleachers in the background at right.

A similar photograph of a different race at the same meet appears under the title, "SURPRISE VICTOOR IN HALF MILE," and with the caption, "Here's Dick Pollard, left, as he hit the tape to win the 880 for Pomona in yesterday's meet with Occidental. The Sagehen sophomore has just nosed out Mel Caldwell of Oxy at the finish. Bob McKee is the man to the rear, while Nord, who finished third, is hidden by Caldwell.
