The Long Beach High School track stretches across the foreground and back to the left. In the mid-ground at left, Palmer (rightmost) and his teammate Waldrop of the U.S.S. New York lead in the 220-yard race. Behind and to the left of them, Spies(?) (U.S.S. California) goalposts his arms as he runs. The rest of the field trails behind them at left. A few spectators at right view the race from behind a wire fence that lines the outside of the track. Empty bleachers at right rise behind them.
