Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph appears with the article, "Occidental Track Squad Humbles U.C.L.A. in September Meet on Westwood Oval," Los Angeles Times, 10 Apr 1932: F2. A throng of men, women, and children stand to the side of the track and watch as Bernie and Jimmie throw themselves over the final hurdle. Kenny stands the closest to the crowd on one leg. The Oxy Tigers won 70 3-5 defeating UCLA Bruins 60 1-2. Text from newspaper caption: WHEN OXY'S "IRON-MAN" CAME THROUGH Jimmie Meeks, sensational Oxy athlete, proved beyond a doubt that he is one of the best competitive runners in Southern California yesterday in the Oxy-U.C.L.A. meet at Westwood. Meeks, after winning the high hurdles and placing second in the quarter-mile, won the low-hurdle race. The photo below was snapped as the boys went over the last hurdle. Kenny Knight, Bruin star (left,) was leading by a yard at this stage with Meeks (center) coming up fast. Bernie Miller of U.C.L.A. is the third man in the race. Meeks clipped the hurdle with his leg but gained speed in spite of the mishap. He sped past Knight to win by inches. Text from negative sleeve: TRACK, UCLA VS. OCCIDENTAL, 1932
