Photograph of Capt. William F. Verleger, master of Admiral Byrd's supply ship, on the Matson liner Lurline upon his arrival in Los Angeles. He was on his way home to Connecticut to recover from pneumonia that he contracted while in Antarctica as part of Rear Admiral Richard Byrd's second expedition to the continent.
