Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. A donkey and 2 boys stand next to a house damaged by a catastrophic flood and mudslide. The donkey is carrying belongings and the house is inundated with mud. A similar stand alone photograph appears with the caption: Primitive Transportation Revived After Flood: The 1934 Model Water Wagon; The precious fluid is carried by burros to the workers in flooded La Crescenta area [Los Angeles Times, 3 Jan. 1934]. In November 1933, wildfires raged through the San Gabriel Mountains above the Crescenta Valley. Two floods followed the next year. In late December, a series of storms dropped 12 inches of rain. On New Year's Eve, heavy rains led to sporadic flooding. Around midnight, mountain hillsides collapsed sending millions of tons of mud into the Crescenta Valley neighborhoods below. More than 400 homes were destroyed in La Cañada, La Crescenta, Montrose and Tujunga. Scores of people were killed, and hundreds were left homeless.
