The original Los Angeles County Courthouse was built in 1891 on Poundcake Hill on the corner of Temple and Broadway in downtown Los Angeles. The Victorian-style red sandstone building was declared unsafe after a 1933 earthquake, and demolished in 1936. Standing next to it was the Hall of Records. Stephen Mallory White (1853–1901) was an American politician and U.S. Senator from California. The statue of Stephen M. White, created and placed in front of the courthouse in 1908, is now located in San Pedro at Cabrillo Beach (33.710333, -118.285733).
