A large crowd of hundreds of people line up at food service tables in California Zoological Gardens and receive barbecue lunches. The camera views the scene from overhead. In the foreground at center, a couple women stand behind a serving table and dish out barbecue to picnic attendees standing at left. One man looks at the women while he waits for his food and the man next to him holds a plate of food. Many others line up behind them. In the lower left corner, a woman stands and wipes her face. To the right of the service tables, crates of food line the back edge of the service area. A few workers mill about at right. In the background, the crowd occupies the park grounds as they extend into the distance.
This photograph appears with the article, "Army of men, women and children at benefit event: BARBECUE DRAWS THRONG sixty thousand assemble for annual festivities of sheriff's relief association," Los Angeles Times, 16 Jul. 1934: A1.
