Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. The Griffith Observatory was created using a design developed by architects John C. Austin and Frederick M. Ashley based on preliminary sketches by Russell W. Porter. View of 2 visitors at the entrance to the Griffith Observatory shortly after its opening. The granite steps flanked by potted plants lead up to the art deco bronze panels of the doorway and the cast-in-place concrete structure. The monumentality of the wall surface is enhanced by ornamental banding surmounted by Greek key and dentil moldings. Above the doorway is the "Griffith Observatory" sign. And above that is the copper paneling of the octagon is with a portion of the copper clad central dome behind it. The original concrete surface is visible; consistent with other similar architecture of the day, the Observatory's concrete walls were left unpainted in the 1930s and 1940s.
