About a dozen investigators stand in the desert near the Northcott family's chicken ranch and watch as Riverside County an unidentified man begins to dig for evidence. The man digging stands 3rd from the right and holds a shovel. He bends over as he digs into the ground. Several more investigators stand to the left of him. Gordon S. Northcott was later tried and convicted for the serial murders of young boys in the area. His mother, Sarah Louisa Northcott, was also imprisoned for assisting him. Similar photographs of the Northcott investigation appear in a photo spread titled: "Paradoxical Situations Complicate Task of Investigators in Butcher Farm Quest: Principals and Scenes in Butcher Farm Investigation," Los Angeles Times, 16 Sep. 1928: A3 Handwritten text from negative sleeve: norcutt [sic] case, wineville chicken ranch NO. 129 Bx 1
