View towards an entrance to the California Pacific International Exposition in Balboa Park, San Diego. On the left is a warning sign which reads, "Stop, Exposition Grounds, California Pacific International Exposition, Under Construction Open May 29th... Please show credentials to Guards." The entrance is a drive lined by trees. There is a lantern in the center foreground and a man, possibly a guard at the gate. In the background, there's an archway at the end of the drive. The tower of the California Building by architect Bertram Goodhue (now San Diego Museum of Man) is visible in the background on the right. Other signs include, "Zoo", "Detour", and "No Parking." Cars are parked outside on the right.
The California Pacific International Exposition was an exposition held in San Diego, California during May 29, 1935–November 11, 1935 and February 12, 1936–September 9, 1936, in Balboa Park. The Exposition was held to promote San Diego and support its economy, which had slowed down with the country's Great Depression. The first year was such a financial and attendance success that it was held over for a second year. The exposition had hundreds of exhibits in history, the arts, horticulture, ethnic cultures, science, and industry.
Charles Hamilton Owens (1881-1958) was an illustrator and landscape painter, and Los Angeles Times staff artist [identified as the photographer in image ark no. 21198/zz002d9x88].
