Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Juan Larrinaga (Juan Baptista Manuel Larrinaga) was born on San Antonia, Baja, Mexico. He graduated from St. Vincents College in Los Angeles in 1900, worked as an artist-designer in the movie industry, and was an art director for several expositions around the country. Photograph of Governor Merriam giving the dedication in front of the California State Building on the opening day of the California Pacific International Exposition. The Frieze and mural by Juan Larrinaga are visible behind him. Governor Merriam is visible wearing the same suit and tie in a photograph published with the article, "Crowds Hail Beauty of Exposition at San Diego as Without Peer in History," Los Angeles Times, 30 May 1935: 5. Charles Hamilton Owens (1881-1958) was an illustrator and landscape painter, and Los Angeles Times staff artist [identified as the photographer in image ark no. 21198/zz002d9x88].
