Bide-a-Wee Home, 2-story Greek Revival Italianate house with upper and lower story slanted bay windows, dental decorations at eaves, wide porch, and stucco exterior, with scaffolding and ladders around addition wing at left, wide steps, retaining wall, walkway, lawn, and palm trees in foreground, two women visible in silhouette near house at right, shadow of photographer and another person on walkway in foreground This house was built in 1876 for William Hayes Perry, designed by architects Ezra Frank Kysor and Walter J. Mathews. It was later the residence of Judge Stephen C. Hubbell; the YWCA International Institute of Los Angeles; and the Bide-A-Wee Home, established by Minnie Barton to serve single women, single mothers and their children, and orphans. Its address was 1315 Pleasant Avenue, Los Angeles. In 1975 it was moved to Heritage Square Museum, Los Angeles, restored, and opened for public tours. Possibly related to the article “Blaze Devours Mortgage, Big Sisters’ League Members Formally Celebrate Bide-A-Wee Home’s Release from Debt,” Los Angeles Times, 6 Jan. 1928. The article states: “… The mortgage was taken out a year ago when funds were needed to remodel the Bide-A-Wee Home at 1315 Pleasant avenue, an institution maintained for the care of deserted wives and their children. …” Text from nitrate negative sleeve: Bide-A-Wee Home Handwritten at edge of negative: Bide A Wee Home
