Commander Richard E. Byrd stands on the deck of the Norwegian ship, C. A. Larsen, with a group of young men. The group forms a semi-circle that is open to camera and is comprised of a dozen or more young men. Commander Byrd stands, off-center to the left, and looks towards the left. He appears to converse with the man in the suit to the immediate left of him. Both men, and a few of the boys to the right of them, hold onto a dark, blank banner. Igloo, Commander Byrd's dog, stands to the right of his owner and looks to camera. The ship's rigging and flags are visible overhead and in the background.
A similar photograph of the same event appears in a small photo spread titled, "Off for Great Adventure in Lands of Ice and Snow," Los Angeles Times, 11 Oct. 1928: A1
