He dons his military uniform and lifts his cap to wave adieu as he departs on his South Pole expedition aboard the Norwegian ship, C. A. Larsen. The ship's rigging and a mast are visible in the background. Harbor waters stretch into the distance beyond the ship.

Text from accompanying press release: Watch your credit _________"P & A Photos" LA 15311---------(Los Angeles Bureau) Byrd Expedition Leaves. Commander Richard Byrd and his party left Los Angeles Harbor today (Oct. 10th) on the C. A. Larsen on the first lap of a trip that proposes exploration of undiscovered land in the Antarctic. The Larsen is bound for Dunedin, New Zealand, where Byrd will be reunited with other members of his expedition who sailed from the eastern seaboard.
