Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Austin Clapp was an American swimmer and water polo player who competed in the 1928 and 1932 Summer Olympics. In 1928 he won a gold medal in the 4x200 m freestyle relay event and in 1932 he was a member of American water polo team, which won a bronze medal. Swimmer Austin Clapp holding 2 displays of his swimming medals at the Ambassador Hotel Plunge event in Los Angeles. A life preserver behind him is inscribed: "Ambassador Hotel Plunge, Los Angeles, Calif." Clapp and several other athletes participated in the Plunge event en route to the senior national outdoor championships at Honolulu. Text from newspaper caption: Honorary Life Membership in Hollywood Athletic Club has been voted Austin Clap, 17, Hollywood youth who was member of Olympic swimming team [Los Angeles Times, 9/14/1928 Text from insert in negative sleeve: Olympic Swimmer to Enter Stanford University. Austin Clapp, 17 year old Hollywood High School youngster, only west coast swimmer to make the trip to Amsterdam with the championship American team, was given an honorary life membership in the Hollywood Athletic Club at a dinner staged in his honor recently. Clapp has won practically eve[ry] indoor and outdoor sprint and distance championship in this vicinity, including two world's inter-scholastic 440 and 880 yard records, and has [illegible] the junior national 440 yard medley championship for the past two years.
