George Zobelein was an early settler of Los Angeles and established his own beer brewing company in the city, first Maier & Zolbein in 1882, then Los Angeles Brewing Co. in 1907. His 350 acre home on S. Figueroa and 38th Streets was known for its lush flora. Zobelein stands in front of his multi-level home. His car is parked on the left and area surrounding the house is populated with trees. The date on the negative sleeve indicates the photo may have been taken in 1931. On the same occasion, Zobelein is photographed reading an issue of the Times from February 7, 1929, when the photograph was most likely taken. Text from negative sleeve: Zobelein, George 1931 A different photograph taken on the same occasion appears with the article, “Lives in a Forest,” Los Angeles Times, 11 Jan 1931: J13.
