Los Angeles Times, 16 Mar. 1928: A1. The California Botanic Garden in Mandeville Canyon was founded by the businessman and naturalist H. C. Oakley. It opened in 1928. Due to the nature of its financing and the onset of the Great Depression, the garden closed in 1935.
