Portrait of Kanju Kato, labor leader and chairman of the National Council of Trade Unions in Japan, who protested against the wave of militarism in Japan leading up to World War II. On his lapel, he wears the pin of an unidentified organization.
In 1944 Kato married Shidzue Kato, Japanese feminist leader and one of the first women elected to the Diet of Japan.
