Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Captain Bert Massey, a Los Angeles Police Department officer who also served as administrator of the Liquor Control Act in Los Angeles County, seated at the head of a table in the center of the photo, with two women at each side of the table. Behind Massey is a man in a light-colored suit, seated in a chair. Behind a bench in the background are Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney H. Leslie Wildey on the left and a person whose head is obscured by Massey's. This photograph was possibly taken during a California State Senate committee's July 1935 investigation of favoritism that existed in the issuance of liquor licenses in Los Angeles County. Wildey was appointed to act as an observer during the hearings and report to the grand jury any information that indicated criminal activities. Possibly related to the article, "NIGHT CLUB MEN FACING NEW CHARGE: Cited Again for Contempt Sebastian and Pollock Free on Writ After Being Ordered to Jail Saved From Jail by Writ," Los Angeles Times, 13 Jul. 1935: 1. Text from negative sleeve: 1329-- Bert Massey - Seated; L-R - Standing - Floyd, Crutchfield, Robert Brown, Wm Goffrey, Geo Hahn, Park Litten, Mrs Ida B Jones, Mrs M E Torlesky; original envelope not returned to me, [stamped:] Jun 8- 1936.
