Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. The photograph is taken from the back of the theater. The audience is sitting in long benches; many women are wearing hats. The stage is set up to look like stone stairs descending into a courtyard where blurred actors are performing. The 13th season of the Pilgrimage Play: the Life of the Christ opened July 11, 1935, and continued every night through summer, excluding Sundays. The play was adapted from the Bible by Christine Wetherill Stephenson, and had a cast of over 100 people, most of them veterans of past seasons. The play was performed at the Pilgrimage Theater in Hollywood. Related to "Pilgrimage Play Opens in Spiritual Artistry," Los Angeles Times, 12 Jul 1935: A1.
