Los Angeles Times, 14 Mar. 1936 An up-ended and wrecked mechanical crawler crane appears slightly buried in ground, with its undercarriage exposed. In the immediate foreground are nearby railroad tracks. Three boys and a man look through the wreckage. Signage on the crane reads, "Consolidated Crane Service, Excavating Contractor." In the background are palm trees, shrubbery, and what appears to be a wall. Debris is dispersed throughout. A locomotive crashed into the crane as it was being towed by a truck that was crossing the railroad tracks. No one was injured. Image is possibly from a glass plate negative. Text on sleeve mistakenly identifies crane as tractor. Additionally, accident occured on March 23, 1936, not March 25, as dated on sleeve. Text from sleeve: 2570-- 3/25/36, Train + Tractor Wreck at, -Claremont,- Text from newspaper caption: Speeding Locomotive Reduces Large Crane To Junk, This pile of tangled wreckage is all that remains of a heavy steel crane after it was struck early yesterday by the Santa Fe Chief near Claremont. Noboy was injured, according to reports, although damage of $25,000 to the locomotive and $15,000 to the crane was estimated. The train was delayed more than eight hours. The impact was so hard mail cars were sprung and bent.
