Five smartly-dressed women--Frances Sue Coffin (later Hazeltine), Virginia Dunning, Emelie Childs (later Hall), Margaret Coberly (later married to Allan Henry Hoover, son of former President Herbert Hoover), and Elizabeth "Betty" Ebbert (later Langton)--carry luggage out of an airplane. Two stand on the runway and admire a dress in an open suitcase lying on the plane's wing. Another woman holds on to another piece of luggage and smiles for the camera. Two others are just walking out of the plane's exit and are stepping down the stairs. "TWA" is painted on the aircraft, standing for Trans World Airlines, now a defunct company. These women were most likely volunteers in the September 16th fashion show fundraisers for the Los Angeles Junior League (also known as, Junior League of Los Angeles) and the Los Angeles Assistance League (now known as the Assistance League of Southern California). They were helping transport or pick up the clothing that was to be modeled.
Text from newspaper caption: By fast boat from Paris and plane from New York sped the gowns which will be displayed a week from tomorrow at the luncheon and dinner fashion shows sponsored jointly by the Junior League and the Assistance League. Who could resist taking an advance peek at them right on the spot TWA landed the new fall models? Not Frances Sue Coffin, Mrs. Dodge Dunning, Emelie Childs, Margaret Coberly, and Bettie [sic] Ebbert. They met the plane which I. Magnin's the bridal costumes for the shows at the Ambassador.
