Related to article, "Death Listed As Homicide: Simpson Inquest Conducted, Newsboy Sent Back to Jail Over Fatal Injuries of Elderly Man in Fight." Los Angeles Times, 4 October 1935
Wilfred Simpson, son of victim, sits on the witness stand next to Los Angeles County Deputy Coroner Frank Monfort, who appears to be sitting on the judge's bench and examining documents. A group of men, who appear to be part of the jury, sit nearby. Simpson was the son of manslaughter victim, William E. Simpson, a landlord who died during a heated argument with his tenant, defendant Phillip Shereshewfsky. The argument between Shereshewfsky and Simpson turned violent. After being struck by Shereshewfsky, Simpson hit the pavement and died from a skull fracture. Shereshewfsky is referred to with the surname of "Pearl" in early newspaper articles relating to the trial. Additionally his first name is spelled as "Philip" or "Phillip" in various articles. His family possibly used both last names interchangeably. As for William E. Simpson, his birth year and age are suspect. His census and official records do not correspond to the age the articles cite.
