Luxury ocean liner Arandora Star anchored in the Los Angeles Harbor at San Pedro.
The Arandora Star was the flagship of the British-owned Blue Star Line (Ltd). She was launched on April 1, 1927 and cruised the Pacific and Atlantic oceans carrying some 350 passengers. In 1939 she was converted by the Royal British Navy to an armed merchant ship. On July 2, 1940 -- while transporting German and Italian prisoners of war to Canadian intern camps -- she was torpedoed by a German U-Boat. More than 800 people, roughly half those onboard, were lost with the ship.
