This photograph is related to the article, "JAPANESE LINER ON MAIDEN TRIP: Pathfinder of Motor-ship Line Welcomed Luxurious Merchantman Cost $6,000,000 Unsurpassed on Pacific in Accommodations," Los Angeles Times, 30 Oct. 1929: A1 The Japanese commercial ship, Asama Maru, sails through the water in the near distance at center. It is viewed from its starboard side and with its bow facing to the right. The ship appears to sail away from the camera. Two striped funnels sit atop the decks, right-of-center. Dark smoke billows out from the leftmost stack. A very similar photograph of the Asama Maru at sea appears in a small photo spread titled, "Deluxe Ship Pays First Call Here," and captioned, “New Nipponese Vessel Welcomed (Above) Burt Edwards, general manager of the port, welcoming Capt. G. Shinomiya of Asama Maru and Y. Shimidzu, traffic manager of N.Y.K. (Below) Asama Maru,” Los Angeles Times, 30 Oct. 1929: A1 Text from negative sleeve: ASAMA MARU SHIP Handwritten on negative: SxSx Asama Maru
