Text from newspaper caption: Girl Conquerors of Mt. Whitney: They challenge any other girls to equal their record. Nell Herring, left, and Mary Nan Gooch, right, students of Compton Junior College, who recently climbed Mt. Whitney alone to the height of 14,496.811 feet. They hiked in from Giant Forest and, among other adventures, lost their camera when it fell off their pack donkey's back. They say they doubt whether the trip has been made before by two unaccompanied girls under 20 [Los Angeles Times, 4 Oct. 1935: 8]
